Bigs Receive President's Volunteer Service Award
Burke County United Way recently honored volunteers in the community with the President's Volunteer Service Award during National Volunteer Week.
This year's theme was "Inspire by Example." The President's Volunteer Service Award is the most prestigious volunteer award associated with the White House. It is given by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President. To receive this award volunteers must give a minimum of 100 hours in a year in volunteer service.
Nine Bigs in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program were honored with this award. A letter from President Bush, a certificate and a President's Service Award lapel pin were presented to recipients at the May Advisory Council meeting.

Pictured from left to right are Big Brothers: Tom Blumer, Paul Dellinger, Keith Atkins, Nathan Brown and Steven Lian, with Linda Minich (front), Burke County Program Coordinator. Unable to attend were Big Brothers John Butler and Antonio Magri and Big Sisters Kerri Griffin and Melissa Griffin.
Little in Local Community Theatre
Little Sister Christy appeared in a local community theatre production of “Life with Father”.
Christy played the part of one of the maids in a household that has a high turnover of maids due to “Father’s” short fuse. Program Coordinator, Linda Minich, Christy’s
Big Sister Kerri Griffin,
Big Sister Heather Callahan and her Little Sister Candace were all able to attend one of the showings.
Christy enjoyed this activity so much that she plans to try out for future community theatre performances.
