Join us on Tuesday, October 25 between 5:00 and 9:00 for dinner at Wild Wing Cafe! The restaurant will donate 10% of sales that evening to BBBS! Littles can enjoy the Pumpkin Pageant and view decorated pumpkins entered by area schools. They can also decorate a pumpkin and wear a costume to enter the costume contest. Bigs will receive a free kid’s meal coupon toward their Little’s meal that evening.

On Thursday, August 26th, we kicked off an effort to begin the adventure of a lifetime for 60 young people in Buncombe County. That night, 15 adults stepped up to become Bigs. On Sunday, September 26th at 2:00 P.M., steveNyou Presented “It’s Big Time”: a fun, affordable event for the whole family! This circus-style event benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina, and features clowns and jugglers, magicians and musicians.

Performers included:

Acrobats from Asheville Aerial Arts,
Members of the Asheville Runaway Circus
The Asheville Vaudeville Troupe
as well as live music by Firefly Soda
and awesome ice cream scooped up by The Hop Ice Cream Cafe

Proceeds from this event support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ efforts to recruit 60 new adult “Bigs” this fall. This recruitment drive can be the start of something big for the boys who are waiting, sometimes up to a year, for a Big Brother. Check out this video to learn more about the event:

Life Without, Voices of Children with Incarcerated Parents

Award-winning film maker, Melissa Mummert’s work in Charlotte with children of incarcerated parents has resulted in a powerful, thought-provoking 35 minute documentary Life Without, Voices of Children with Incarcerated Parents.

She and several of the children, who made short films of their lives that together make up the documentary, will be in Asheville to screen the film and lead a discussion on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 7 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville (1 Edwin Pl. corner of Charlotte St & Edwin Pl)

Sponsored by Western Carolinians for Criminal Justice, the church’s Human Rights Task Force, and the Social Action Committee of the UU Congregation of the Swannanoa Valley, the film is free is open to the public.
