Fiber Fun in October

If you and your Little are in to knitting, weaving, spinning, felting, or pretty much anything to do with fiber and yarn, we have a great opportunity for you.  If you like cute furry animals, like rabbits, sheep, angora goats, or Llamas and Alpacas, get ready to have fun.  If you have been curious about any of these things, but don’t know where to begin, then get ready.  The Southern Appalachian Fiber Fair is coming to the WNC Ag Center on October 22-24th.  Big Sister Crystal Lawrence is part of the team which is putting the event together.  She is looking for matches who can help turning skeins of yarn into balls (there is a simple device involved that does the job quickly.)  Fair attendees will be charged a small fee for this service and the proceeds will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters.  Matches who volunteer for a two hour shift will get free entry to the fair.  For more information, visit the fair’s website http://www.saffsite.org.  To volunteer, call Crystal at 242-3446.

Free Activities for Kids at Lake James

Want to get out of town with your Little?  Here is a great opportunity from Lake James State Park:

“Lake James State Park is holding Kid Camp from 10 a.m.-noon each Friday through Aug. 13. Come for just one program or come for all. Each week will be a different wild topic. Kid Camp is free of charge but we ask that you register by calling the park office at 652-5047.

Kid Camp for July 16 is “Meet A Tree.” Take a short hike to learn about the parts of a tree, the life cycle, look at tree cookies and more. Meet at the picnic shelter at 10 a.m. A canoe excursion is also planned for this weekend – at 10 a.m. July 17. Join Park Ranger Clay Veasey for a leisurely morning paddle along the shores of Lake James. Bring water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. The rangers will provide canoes, paddles and life jackets. Due to the nature of this program, audience size will be limited to 14 spaces. Call 652-5047 to register by noon on July 16. Only individuals who are registered will be allowed to attend. The canoe excursion is for ages 7 and up. Meet at the park office at 9 a.m.”

Fun at the Nature Center!

25 Bigs and Littles joined us at the Nature Center for a summer outing. The Littles got to “pet” a wide variety of snakes, from tiny garter snakes to a huge Burmese Python. The group also enjoyed the Butterfly Garden, saw peacocks, watched the otters swim, and petted goats.  Assistant Director Jamye Davis struggled with a goat that was eating the kids’ Scavenger Hunt papers!

School’s out! Time to think about Back-to-school!

Big Brothers Big Sisters extends a huge thank you to Mission Hospital, Asheville Savings Bank, the YMCA, and other local businesses and churches that donated to the Back-to-School Drive! More than 130 filled backpacks were given to youth in the BBBS program. Thanks to the community for such generosity, and a special thank you to United Way for coordinating this important event.

Many opportunities are in store at the Swannanoa Valley Museum

The Swannanoa Valley Museum in Black Mountain is a great place to take your little for an outing.  Located in the heart of the town, the Swannanoa Valley Museum has a permanent collection of artifacts as well as rotating exhibits.  In addition to providing fun and educational opportunities within its walls, the Museum hosts events on a regular basis that explore the area’s rich natural and cultural offerings.  Some are listed below and more can be found on the SVM website: www.swannanoavalleymuseum.org.

See the Black Mountain Fireworks from a Mountaintop

Each year, the Town of Black Mountain presents an awesome display of fireworks on the Fourth of July.  And for many years, the Swannanoa Valley Museum has offered a unique viewpoint for watching the fireworks show–from high on a mountaintop.

The event is a hike up Sunset Mountain, (aka Miami Mountain) with a short program of historical interpretation followed by a bar-b-que supper and a watermelon-cutting.  A new view spot has been cleared (thanks to Mother Nature’s ice storms last winter), and we will be able to see the fireworks from the peak of the mountain.

This is an ideal family event (sorry, no dogs), and one that will make for a memorable Fourth of July.  The hike is moderate, about 45 minutes in length, but uphill (that’s what it takes to get to a mountaintop.)

Details:  Participants will meet in the parking lot of Black Mountain Savings Bank, 200 E. State St., at 6:30 pm to carpool to the hike site at the base of Sunset Mountain.  Bring a folding camp style chair and flashlight. (Your chairs will be transported up and down the mountain–you don’t have to carry them!) Since it can get cool after dark, we recommend that you bring a light wrap and perhaps a poncho in case of a rain shower.

Cost is $20 for Museum members; $30 for non-members and includes the bar-b-que supper.  Reservations are required–participation limited so make them early! Call 828-669-9566 or send an email to  swannanoavalleym@bellsouth.net.

It’ll Be a Gem of a Day

The mineral wealth of Western North Caorlina will be on glittering display at the North Carolina Mineral and Gem Show in Spruce Pine from July 29-August 1.

On opening day, Thursday July 29, the Museum will sponsor a Daycation to the show, a journey that promises to be a rockhound’s delight!  Depending on the time spent at the show and the preferences of the participants, we may also visit a local gem mining concession or the NC Mineral Museum just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Details:  Meet in the parking lot of Black Mountain Savings Bank, 200 E. State St., at 10 am to carpool to Spruce Pine.  Cost is $15 for Museum members; $25 for non-members and includes the entree fee to the show.  Food is available inside the show, prepared by the Board of the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce.  (The event is held inside, so no worries about rain.)

Reservations are needed for this event.  Call the Museum, 828-669-9566, or send an email to  swannanoavalleym@bellsouth.net to sign up.
