Michael and Isaiah, a Buncombe County match, celebrated eight years of mentorship in June 2026!
They’ve been fast friends ever since being matched in February 2018. Isaiah wanted his Big to teach him how to fly fish, and Michael, a fly fishing instructor, made that wish come true. They’ve ridden bikes, walked dogs, and visited coffee houses, art galleries, and museums. Michael has shown Isaiah how to fix things around the house and help prepare meals.
Isaiah’s mom has often told BBBSWNC staff how grateful she is for Michael’s presence in her son’s life.
Now a rising high school senior, Isaiah since his freshman year has consistently been on the A/B Honor Roll. He has stayed active in football, weightlifting, and wrestling. Outside of school, you’ll most likely find him swimming, playing basketball or soccer with friends, or spending time with the people he loves.
Michael sets a good example of community service for Isaiah by volunteering as Santa Claus every year, to the delight of local children. Isaiah has shown his affection by making Michael a Father’s Day gift.
“Over the past eight years, Michael and Isaiah have built far more than a mentorship,” said Marta Corbin, a former Buncombe County Program Coordinator. “They’ve built a lifelong bond grounded in trust, encouragement, and genuine friendship.
“Watching them grow together has been a beautiful reminder of the lasting impact that one caring, consistent relationship can have.”
