“Have you ever read about an unlikely friendship?”

So begins Little Sister Isabella’s homework assignment which continues to touchingly highlight her friendship with her Big Sister Melba (November’s Big Of The Month!) Read her sweet essay in full below.

When School-Based Program Little Sister Isabella was assigned to write about an “unlikely friendship” the first thing that came to her mind was to describe her relationship with her Big Sister Isabella.

Melba Cantu and Isabella were matched in March of 2016 at a local elementary school in Big Brothers Big Sisters’ School-Based program. Isabella needed a extra support with her math and—being an employee of GE Avitation—Melba had the skills and perspective to really offer an enriching mentor for Isabella.

Now, a year and a half later, Isabella is doing very well in school and credits her Big Sister for her success. Melba is a dedicated mentor—she and Isabella meet once each week for an hour at school to work on academics and then have time to fun activities and good conversation.

Additionally, Melba volunteers her time on weekends at special events, supports our annual fundraiser, Bowl For Kids’ Sake, and attends other BBBS functions.

So much gratitude for all that Melba brings to our program and to Isabella’s life.
