Mission Thursday: A parent expresses her gratitude for Michael

Here’s a MISSION THURSDAY story, written by the parent of an Asheville-area Little, that perfectly illustrates what we’re about.

“I knew that having the right male in my son’s life was important. When he became the appropriate age, I decided to visit BBBS.

“Not too much later, I got a call for a potential match, but he was older. I wasn’t too sure, activity-wise, that he’d be able to relate to my 9-year-old. But on the day to meet the potential match, I noticed Michael immediately because he looked like Santa Claus. How fun!

“I was blown away by Michael’s background in using fishing as therapy with challenged adults before he retired. Needless to say, I was quite pleased and hoped Isaiah felt the same. He did.

“I think it’s been two years now. Michael sees Isaiah almost every weekend, not just fishing but taking him to a variety of things, a glass blowing studio, to Well Played, to different parks, to plays, taking advantage of several things BBBS offers.

“I’ve been able to discuss things in my son’s life with Michael that I knew he could give my son guidance on. They have a great relationship, and Isaiah looks forward to their time together. We are both very thankful for Michael and BBBS for their program.”
