Polk County artists ‘Have a HeArt’ for BBBS

Jane Hickey’s “Clementine, It’s All Good”

The eighth annual Have a HeArt project at Upstairs Artspace was another huge success. When 111 pieces of “heArt” work were donated from nearly 70 regional artists, it was clear that we had the support of a generous and talented community. Opening packages and unwrapping the art work is akin to Christmas surprises, with volunteers and staff oohing and aahing over every entry. These artistic creations made setting up the show such a joy.

Each year the HeArts fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters has generated more and more enthusiasm and support from artists and the community. This year’s event was again met with a rousing response, with visitors frequently remarking on the impressive quality and diversity of the show. To appreciate all that this entails, a photo album of the artwork can be viewed on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC Polk Facebook page.

Upstairs Artspace has generously provided the host site annually for the BBBS silent auction of heart-themed art. This year the hearts were shown in the upstairs of the gallery, allowing guests greater access to easily view all of the artwork during a big opening reception and in the two weeks following. The silent auction for HeArts ended with a packed closing reception on January 26, with bidders vying for their favorite pieces.

Many were thrilled to win one of these treasures. It was a wonderful opportunity to collect a unique piece of artwork or win a special Valentine’s gift while also supporting a local charity that serves children and makes such a difference in their lives.

Big Brothers Big Sisters acknowledges the generosity of the artists who donated their work for this worthy cause, the hosts at Upstairs Artspace, the sponsors who covered the costs of the event, those who came out to view and bid, and the volunteers that helped with the event. It does indeed take a village to provide mentoring services to area children.
