AmeriCorps NC has hired its latest cohort of Project MARS members to serve in schools and communities in Western North Carolina. And it’s still recruiting members for the 2026 school year.
During the newly convened school year, members will help teachers in elementary and middle school classrooms. Each will also mentor a young student, helping him or her with challenges that might include schoolwork, emotional control, or peer relationships.
A year with Project MARS/AmeriCorps is often a unique growing experience – exciting, challenging, intense, and fulfilling – that offers opportunities to develop skills as a mediator, teacher, mentor, facilitator, and agent of positive change in a community.
Members spend the year participating in professional development in a supportive team environment, serving youth both in school and afterschool/summer programs. Members also take part in community service projects.
Each year, millions of individuals of all ages and backgrounds help meet local needs through a wide array of service opportunities through the Corporation for National and Community Service’s core programs: AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the Social Innovation Fund. These programs and others, such as the Volunteer Generation Fund, support projects in six priority areas: disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and veterans and military families.
Project MARS/AmeriCorps members serve through Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC to ensure that every child has an enjoyable, long-term relationship with a caring adult who believes in them and sees their potential.
