Here’s an email we received recently from Shelbie English, the BBBS program coordinator in Henderson County.
Yesterday (Feb. 20) I went on a college tour with Little Brother Nestor and Big Brother Tom. Tom is our Big of the Year. Tom’s wife, Nancy, and Nestor’s mom Anita and sister were there as well.
Nestor and I have been working on getting him set up with a scholarship at Mars Hill University, one that will hopefully get him a full-ride or pretty close to it. After contacting the scholarship office, they were kind enough to set us up with a tour of the campus, and Nestor was even able to meet with two of the football coaches (he has been the kicker at East High during high school). He then had his interview for his scholarship, which I believe went very well.
What excites me the most about all of this, is that BBBS was able to be very present in helping Nestor ignite his potential for the future. This is what it is all about! These instances get me, and hopefully you as well, fired up about what we are doing for the kiddos in our community.
Our new objective Friendships with A Purpose puts into practice a support team for each child we serve. The team consists of the parent/guardian, the volunteer, BBBS, and other supporters. Yesterday I saw this in action, and it was heartwarming.
While Nestor was sitting with the admissions officer, Tom was talking with the football coach, relaying his admiration and support of Nestor. I was in the scholarship office helping to prep Nestor for his interview and working with the staff on his case. Nancy was there to ask questions that Nestor’s mom was not able to voice due to a language barrier. Anita was giving Nestor soothing pats, and calming phrases to keep him steady. His sister held his hand on the tour.
It was incredibly touching to see the harmony in which this match works. It made me feel incredibly sure about what we are doing, and the power behind matches that really go the distance. Building a team around the child to help them reach their hopes and dreams. There was a whole group there to support Nestor, and I think it made all of the difference!
BIG snaps for everyone!
