Volunteer Requirements

Before proceeding in your application, we want to make sure you better understand the volunteer requirements for each of our programs. Please review the volunteer requirements below to make sure you qualify.

Volunteer Requirements for Community-Based Program

  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Commit to mentoring a youth for a minimum of one year.
  3. Commit to twice a month outings for several hours each time.
  4. Be willing and physically able to engage in activities with an active child (such as soccer, biking, hiking, etc.). Other activities may include building, baking, cooking, events etc.
  5. Have reliable transportation, license and the NC minimum state automobile insurance. We cannot access motor vehicle records for the following states: AL AZ, DE, DC, KS, MA, MI, MT, NJ, OH, UT, VA, WV, WI and WY. If you have a license from one of these states, please obtain a NC driver’s license before submitting a volunteer enrollment form.
  6. Be willing to pick the child up at their home and drop them back off there.
  7. Be willing to maintain contact with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Match Support Coordinator on a monthly basis.
  8. With the goal of building Friendships with a Purpose, be willing to help your mentee build Positive Youth Development behaviors (self-confidence, assertiveness, perseverance, a positive sense of their future and opportunities) through a variety of shared activities.

Volunteer Requirements for School-Based Program

  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Commit to be matched with a child for at least one year
  3. Commit to weekly 1-hour visits with the assigned student at his/her school
  4. Have a valid driver’s license. We cannot access motor vehicle records for the following states: AL, AZ, DE, DC, KS, MA, MI, MT, NJ, OH, UT, VA, WV, WI and WY. If you have a license from one of these states, please obtain a NC driver’s license before submitting a volunteer enrollment form.
  5. Be willing and motivated to help a young person succeed academically by helping with classwork and reading. Be willing to help build interpersonal skills through board games, puzzles, arts/crafts, etc.
  6. Be willing to maintain contact with Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Match Support Coordinator on a monthly basis.
  7. With the goal of Building Friendships with a Purpose, be willing to help the young person build Positive Youth Development behaviors (including self-confidence, assertiveness, perseverance, positive sense of the future and opportunities) through a variety of shared activities.
