In rural communities, relationships matter — and we are calling on local leaders, parents, retirees, business owners, and community-minded residents to help shape the future of mentorship for children in by serving on a local advisory Council. We need Advisory Council members in Cashiers, Highlands, the Qualla Boundary and Cherokee, Swain, Jackson, Macon, Transylvania, and Henderson counties.
Advisory council members, supported by BBBSWNC, serve as local champions for children and youth, ensuring that mentoring programs remain strong, visible, and responsive to the needs of their community.
Council members support BBBSWNC by:
- Acting as brand ambassadors, sharing the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout the community
- Helping plan activities and experiences for children (“Littles”) enrolled in the program
- Supporting local fundraising efforts that keep mentoring programs accessible and sustainable
The time commitment is intentionally manageable:
- One hour per month for an advisory council meeting
- An additional 3–5 hours per month during peak fundraising seasons only
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina creates and supports mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of young people. Through school-based, community-based, and group mentoring programs, BBBSWNC helps children build confidence, strengthen academic outcomes, and develop life skills — all with the support of BBBSWNC and caring adults close to home.
“Advisory Council members don’t have to be experts,” Lelia Duncan, BBBSWNC CEO and President, said. “They simply need to care about kids, believe in their community, and be willing to lend their voice. Even a small amount of time can make a lasting difference.”
Community members who want to make a meaningful impact – without a major time commitment – are encouraged to get involved.
