Another Great Story from Project MARS – connecting with a tiny boy

Project MARS/AmeriCorps collects “Great Stories” from its members in which they reflect on their experiences mentoring in the classroom and the progress they see students making. This month’s story was written by Cyn Bird.

I am so blessed to be a part of Ms. Becca’s first-grade class. This is the first of a lot of new things for me this year – my first year with AmeriCorps, my first time in a classroom, my first time being called Mrs. Bird by so many Littles. This year is a first for one kid in Ms. Becca’s class, and this seems to make our bond stronger.

This little boy, so tiny in a big world, is in his first year ever in school. He’s very special to me. I feel the connection as we both get comfortable and familiar with being in a classroom. This opportunity has been amazing. I love what I am doing. I feel this is my calling, I’m so excited to see what the rest of this year brings.
