Big Brothers and Big Sisters recently received a grant from The Fund for Haywood County for $3,141 to implement the “Bigs in Blue” program.
In collaboration with the Waynesville, Canton and Clyde Police Departments and the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office, the program recruits officers and support personnel to provide one-on-one mentoring relationships for struggling students in Haywood County schools.
“We consider the Bigs in Blue program to be a “win-win” situation,” said Martha Barksdale, the Haywood County program coordinator. “It will help us to provide the unique benefits of a one- on-one mentoring relationship for more children and it will increase the visibility of our local law enforcement officers contributing to the well-being of our community.”
