Hello Bigs! Here are the current and upcoming activities for you to enjoy with your Little, as well as a volunteer opportunity!
(This was written by Sara Basile, program and community outreach coordinator for Buncombe County.)
NC Arboretum Eco Explorers, Saturday March 16 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the education center. Match gets in free for the day by showing their BBBS ID card! Everyone will meet in the classroom, learn about ecoEXPLORE, get signed up and have snacks. Then, go on a photo-taking hike around the trails and garden. Finally, everyone will go back to the classroom and practice uploading photo observations to the ecoEXPLORE website. RSVP to ahausle@ncarboretum.org.
Flat Rock Playhouse offers ticket vouchers for the first week of any show. “The Jungle Book” opens March 15! Check out their entire show listing by clicking the link above. Let your Program Coordinator know if you’d like a voucher for two free tickets. These are valid for the first week of the show for you and your Little. When you receive the voucher from us, call the box office at 828-693-0731 to reserve seats and provide the coupon number on the voucher.
Are you a library card holder with Buncombe public libraries? If so, get a free Zoom pass to many local museums and places of interest, including the art museum, museum of science and the WNC Nature Center (see their new red pandas!), to name a few. Click this link to learn more and see where you and your Little can “zoom” to around Asheville!
When the weather is bad, consider a visit to Asheville’s board game cafe, Well Played! Matches play for free and get a 10 percent discount on food.
Here are two upcoming opportunities to volunteer to support/represent BBBS out in the community!
Burgers for BBBS on April 4, 5-9 p.m. at the south Asheville location. Farm Burger is featuring BBBS in their Farm to Community program. BBBS will receive 10 percent of all sales that evening. Please gather friends and family to eat out and support your BBBS team! We’ll have an information table there for the evening and invite you to represent BBBS for an hour during that time. If your Little enjoys talking to people, this is a good chance for them to volunteer as well. RSVP to Sara Basile, sarab@bbbswnc.org if you’d like to be there as a Big representative from 5-7 or 7-9 alongside a staff person.
Ville to Ville relay race on April 13. We are charity partners in this event and will receive a portion of the proceeds. Volunteers will represent BBBS while supporting the runners as they run a 73-mile course from Hendersonville to Asheville! We need early risers for early morning shifts at the relay stations. Course map HERE. Shifts are:
- AC Reynolds Middle School (off Charlotte Hwy): 5:15-9:45 a.m.
- Laurel Creek neighborhood: 5:30-9:15 a.m.
- Skyland Fire Department (9 Miller Road): 6:00-10:30 a.m.
Please join us for sunrise in beautiful east Asheville for this amazing race!
Thank you for all you do to make our programs great.
