Big & Little of the Year – testaments to love, courage, and commitment

Some stories remind us why showing up matters. Of how one caring person can change a life forever. This year, BBBSWNC is honored to recognize our Big and the Little of the Year, John and Mikayla, both from the Polk/Rutherford program – two individuals whose journeys embody hope, faith, and the power of connection.

John, Big Brother of the Year

John did not sign up to be a Big Brother for recognition. He signed up because he felt a calling on his heart, to be present, to listen, and to walk alongside a young person who needed John BBBSWNC BOTY 2025consistency and care. One year and eight months ago, John was matched with his Little Brother, and from that moment on, he committed not just his time, but his heart.

Over the past 20 months, John has stood steady through both joyful moments and difficult seasons. He has been a source of encouragement when things felt heavy, a voice of reassurance when doubts crept in, and a safe place where his Little Brother could be fully himself. Their time together has included laughter and adventure, but also meaningful acts of service working side by side in hurricane cleanup efforts and helping distribute relief supplies after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of our region.

In the days immediately following the storm, when roads were blocked and uncertainty filled the air, John did whatever it took, walking in and cutting through fallen trees, just to make sure his Little Brother and his family were safe. That moment speaks volumes about who John is. His care extends beyond scheduled outings; it reaches into the deepest moments of need.

John’s presence has brought comfort and stability not only to his Little Brother, but to the entire family. Big Brothers Big Sisters believes in igniting the potential of youth while supporting families as a whole, and John lives out that mission with humility and grace. His faith, compassion, and unwavering commitment have created a lasting impact that cannot be measured. For all of this, John is profoundly deserving of the honor of Big Brother of the Year.

Mikayla, Little Sister of the Year

Little Sister Mikayla carries a light that shines even in the darkest moments. Since joining the program in August 2023, she has embraced each experience with joy, sharing special outings with her Big Sister, learning about horses, and cheering proudly at her school. Her smile has always had a way of lifting those around her.

In October 2024, Mikayla’s world changed when she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Her days quickly became filled with treatments, hospital rooms, and uncertainty no child should ever have to face. And yet, through it all, Mikayla has met each challenge with courage, strength, and an unshakable spirit.

Even in the midst of exhaustion and pain, Mikayla continues to think of others, offering encouragement, celebrating small victories, and spreading hope simply by being herself. When she is able, she still joins in activities and finds comfort in the simple things that bring her joy, especially visits with her favorite animal, a Highland cow. Her resilience is not loud, but it is powerful.

Big Brothers Big Sisters looks for a Little of the Year who embraces the program, participates with heart, and uplifts others. Mikayla does all of this effortlessly. She is a reminder that bravery is not the absence of fear, but choosing joy and kindness in spite of it. She is a cheerleader for everyone around her, even while fighting the hardest battle of her own life.

“Being able to witness the journeys of John and Mikayla is a gift,” Jessica Toney, Polk Rutherford Program Coordinator, said. “Their stories remind us that mentorship is built on love, presence, and perseverance, and that sometimes, the most powerful impact comes simply from walking alongside one another.”

“I am deeply honored that they are part of our program, and endlessly grateful to know them not just as a Big and a Little, but as friends who have touched our hearts forever.”
