Congrats to our first batch of graduates!

Will Parks and Calvin Allen

Will Parks, one of 13 BBBSWNC youth who will graduate in June, has been matched with Big Brother Calvin since 2014. “When I first met William Russell Parks,” Calvin said, “he was a squeaky-voiced shrimp of a boy too timid to order his own food at a restaurant. Now, he’s a basso-profundo young man with confidence who will graduate from TC Roberson High School on June 5. He plans to take some time off from school (perhaps working/traveling) and go from there. I predict he’ll go far!”

Kaleya Lackey with Lonna Wilson

Kaleya Lackey, who graduated from East Burke High School on May 26, plans to continue working at Captain’s Galley restaurant and, later, to apply to Western Piedmont Community College. Big Sister Lonna Wilson brought her flowers to congratulate her on her graduation! Kaleya and Lonna were matched in April 2012. “Kalyan enjoys serving in her community and giving back, like fixing meal packets at Valdese Elementary School to hand out to families in need,” said Nina Ervin, BBBS Burke Program Coordinator.

Rashida Dixon, long ago

During their seven years together, Rashida Dixon and her Big Sister Angel Wall of Buncombe County have spent so much time walking in the dog park, talking about things going on in Rashida’s life – “from friendship dynamics to her relationships with her family,” according to Angel.

Rashida Dixon went from hating school to graduating early, her Big Sister said. This fall, Rashida is headed for Winston-Salem State University, where she plans to major in nursing. “She has become an amazing young woman,”  Angel said. “Her outlook on life has very much changed over the years, especially her dedication to her school. She’s going to go far in life.”
