‘When I say I will be there, I am,’ says Big Sister about consistency

This story was written by Big Sister Robin, seen here with her Little Sister.

When people ask me about my experience as a Big Sister, I say, “It’s the best decision I’ve ever made!”

I trusted the Big Brothers Big Sisters staff to pick the best match for me and they did! A whole new world opened for me when I became a Big Sister to Ar’Laya, and I continue to be inspired by the experience every day. The wonder of seeing the world through her eyes is truly rewarding.

Over the almost three years Ar’Laya and I have been matched, our relationship has grown significantly. We met when she had just turned 6, and she just turned 9 in January. This time has provided us with ever-changing interests and ideas for outings together. We enjoy being outdoors, exploring new places and experiences, eating out at different kinds of restaurants, and a myriad of fun adventures in the Asheville area.

The constancy of our outings is the foundation of the trust and safety we’ve built with each other over the years. Ar’Laya knows she can depend on me to show up for her in all ways. When I say I will be there, I am. I’m always excited to spend time with her! Her mother and family are very open and supportive of our time together as well.

The BBBS team is always there to support in every way, providing fun group activities, and lots of ideas for adventures. Thank you, BBBS!
