English as a second language is easier with a mentor

What kind of difference can a mentor make? How about a boost of confidence for a boy learning English?

Little Brother Noe wanted to improve his English this school year, even though he was afraid fluency would make him lose his Spanish.

“When I first spoke with Noe at the beginning of this school year, he did not seem confident in his English,” said Cassie Davis, a program coordinator for BBBS of Western North Carolina. “He would speak softly or reiterate what I said instead of answering in his own words.”

In November, Noe was matched with Jesus, a High School Big who is bilingual. And now, after spending time with his Big, Noe is much more confident in his language skills.

“Noe is speaking louder and answers questions in his own words,” Cassie said, “so I am very excited to see how this match continues.”
