Project MARS/AmeriCorps collects “Great Stories” from its members in which they reflect on their experiences mentoring in the classroom and the progress they see in students. This month’s story was written by Marc Levin.
Serving Project MARS as a BBBSWNC school engagement coordinator, I see a lot of children who need a mentor. Due to the high demand for mentors, children are on the waitlist, sometimes for years. This is why I was so excited to serve in this community.
My position requires me to juggle multiple tasks and responsibilities, and it can be overwhelming at times. But every time I feel discouraged, I think back to John, who was placed on the waitlist to have a mentor 3 years ago. He finally got matched last December.
I still remember his reaction like it was yesterday – jumping up and down with excitement, his smile stretched from ear to ear, exclaiming “I’m so happy that I finally have a Big Brother!”
Hearing how my service has a positive impact on kids and the community, I feel proud to be in a position where I can empower others to make the world a better place.
