My husband and I recently had a house fire where we lost everything. This can be easily described as one of the worst things someone can go through. While of course we are devastated, I truly have only seen goodness and love come from this event.
Project MARS/AmeriCorps collects “Great Stories” from its members in which they reflect on their experiences mentoring in the classroom and the progress they see in students. This month’s story was written by Racheal Fletcher.
From the moment our house fire was put out, we were never without what we needed. Basic needs were being met as our house was still burning to the ground. I have been truly humbled, and in pure awe.
From the immediate reaction of members of our small, local community to people far and wide, we received love and support. I then heard word that Murphy Elementary began collecting donations for us. My AmeriCorps supervisors without hesitation reached out to figure out any need we may have and meet it as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“I have never felt this amount of love and support from any other 9-5 job, which can quickly feel impersonal. AmeriCorps has become more than just a service for me, it has become what my supervisors so lovingly call it, my ‘Amerifamily.'”
