Riding his Big Brother’s inspiration, Kai Mattinas is off to Colorado

Kai and Dave meeting each other eight years ago.

Throughout June and July, we’re celebrating our wonderful, inspiring Littles who have graduated from high school.

In December, Kai Mattinas graduated early from Asheville High School. Nine years ago, he was matched with his Big Brother, Dave. Their mutual love of the outdoors helped propel Kai toward the two endeavors that helped Kai get into college. Their lasting relationship is sure to continue!

“Over the past nine years, it has been a true pleasure to see Kai grow from a shy nine-year-old into a mature and engaging young man,” Dave said. “Today he is an open-minded and adventurous young person whose character and core values show in almost everything he does. He is not afraid to push his comfort zone by seeking ambitious and unique educational opportunities all over the globe, including educational and volunteer service trips to Morocco and Fuji!

“This fall Kai will be heading west to attend Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado. His passion for snowboarding and mountain biking helped guide him to this opportunity, and the fact that I introduced Kai to those two sports is surreal. His love of the mountains and the supportive community around him will keep him grounded and motivated, which is why I am so excited to see what lays ahead of this bright and kind young man!”
