Former BBBS Henderson Advisory Council chairperson Gloria Anderson’s recent column on BlueRidgeNow.com talks about how parents, caregivers and Bigs can support kids during the pandemic.
“So, what do kids need right now?” she asks in her column. “I believe they need the same thing they always have: parents, caregivers, teachers, school staff and other adults who are present and emotionally available.”
She offers examples of what we can do to make kids feel more connected during this time of ongoing separation.
Some ways adults can offer emotional support to kids is to ask open-ended questions such as, “How was your day today?” or “What’s on your mind this afternoon?” Parents and caregivers can promote positive thinking by practicing gratitude; perhaps at dinner, bedtime, driving in the car talking about “what are we grateful for today?” They can play board games, read together or try something new.
